Synuclein for Parkinson's Disease Accumulation of the protein alpha-synuclein (α-syn) in neuronal cell bodies, processes and synapses is characteristic of Parkinson’s disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies and certain other neurological disorders, collectively known as synucleinopathies. Current treatments are at best symptomatic. The goal of Neotope’s approach is to slow down the progressive neurodegenerative consequences of disease, a current unmet need. Human genetics and recent preclinical results implicate the causal role of α-syn in these diseases. Additional animal data provide compelling evidence that the spread of α-syn-associated neurodegeneration can be disrupted by targeting aberrant, self-propagating forms of the protein which can be transmitted between cells, e.g. from neuron to neuron. Neotope is developing unique α-syn antibodies that target such altered forms of α-synuclein.
